If you haven’t heard by now, Facebook is becoming one of the top places to advertise and brand your business! With prices being some of the cheapest in the market, it’s not hard to see why companies all over are scrambling to try and crack the Facebook Ad market. Most failing miserably. In this blog I hope to clear up some common mistakes and give a quality step by step guide to help you create an effective Facebook ad. Creating a Facebook ad isn’t complicated at all right? Sort of. Yes anyone can create an ad but how effective is it? When creating an effective ad remember that your ad is a mixture between the right target audience, creativity with video/pictures, and Facebook’s unique sharing algorithm. I will cover the basics of how to find your audience, and choosing the right settings!

Step 1: Sign Up for Facebook Business/ Ads Manager! Say what? There is another side to Facebook that I have never seen before? Yup! If you aren’t a part of the world of advertising and marketing, you may not have known that there are extra tools and resources for you right there on Facebook. Step 2: After you have signed up for Facebook Manager, now its time to get cracking with the ad creation. Facebook has many variations of Ads. I will break down the meaning below this picture! 

As you can see Facebook has split the ad categories into 3 sections. Awareness, Consideration, and Conversions. I like to follow a simple formula when creating a full campaign for clients. This formula is Brand to Consider to Convert. This means that when I first start out with a new account I am focused on getting the word out that they are here! Branding is important! The more people see your brand, the more they will consider using you! Facebook is a passive form of marketing.

Once the brand has been seen, I then focus on heavy consideration. With about $200 we get our clients close to 800 visitors a month. From this point out I will focus on the Traffic tab. Lets see what that looks like:

For most small business owners, marketing on the social giant called Google can be a daunting task. With all of the guru’s, so called marketing geniuses and over priced SEO companies lurking to get your cash, it can be hard to find a strategy that works for your company. If you are reading this, then when you get done, you will know some tips and tricks to get you found on google.

 

 

With Google being the biggest search engines around, its not hard to see why it is also the most expensive to market with. SEO has become the wave in 2016 but not keeping up with googles trends can cost your company big cha ching. Google is constantly changing the way they search for and crawl your website. An algorithm that they used last year may not even be the same this year. With that being said, have you heard of micro moments? We hadn’t either up until a recent marketing conference that Google provided  in our hometown.

  1. MICRO MOMENT DEFINED  Marketing

As a human species, we live in the moment. When you’re out and about in a place you have never been and you get hungry, the first thing that you do is pick up your phone and ask google ” whats the best restaurant near me”. Within seconds google has pulled up their recommendations. Would you like to know how they find these recommendations? First, they look at your location. Second, they look for companies that offer what you need that are close to you. Third, they look at how well those companies present themselves online. Fourth, they look at the online ratings and reviews of that company. Last, they look at how well that company’s optimization is. This means that they look at mobile responsiveness, coding of the companies website, and that company’s Google Local account. Don’t have a Google local account? Get one here!

After all of that has been reviewed, they then spit out your response! So how do you become a micro moment? Reverse engineer the steps above. Do you have a mobile optimized site? Do you have a google local account? Are your clients reviewing you online? Fix those steps and you will be on your way to becoming the next micro moment.

 

2. SEO and All Its Marketing Wonders

The term Search Engine Optimization has been so loose lately. Every marketing agency claims to know it but very few do. SEO is not an easy trick to master. Like I mentioned earlier Google is constantly changing how they find you. However, some tools still work. Here are a few:

  1. Back Links: The more other websites link back to your website, the more important you are to google. Neil Patel  wrote a wonderful article on how to get backlinks called ” 4 Effective Ways to Build Backlinks For A Brand New Site” .

  2. Use Of Site Maps: A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. Find out how to create a site map here!
  3. Use Of creative and strategic Content:  Creative content consists of Video, Infographics and Blogs about your industry. Using these tools can catapult your results on google.

 

Following a strategy can be tough. A good rule of thumb when creating a strategy for SEO is to create content weekly. Commit to doing two of the steps above each week.

Paid Google Marketing:

PPC can be a life saver when trying to gain a name on Google. PPC stands for Pay Per Click. These campaigns can help you research what keywords are relevant for your industry while gaining you exposure at the same time. Learn how to create a PPC campaign here!

3. Utilize and Grow A Facebook Business Page

What does Facebook have to do with Google? Facebook is the largest social media platform in the world. With billions of users and very affordable marketing campaigns, they play a major role in how google finds content related to your business. When running a business it is easy to get overwhelmed with expenses. We know them all to well. Overhead is another term for it. However, it is also easy to confuse your expense with an investment. This is precisely why a lot of businesses miss their opportunities to scale their company using technology! In this article i hope to shed some light to a pressing issue.  Is my web  project an expense or an investment?

 

 

Pricing structure for web development:

 

Although there are tons of resources that will allow you to build out a website yourself, If you are a company or person that has a big goal or a mission that requires quick expansion, you would want to find an agency that can take you there. The problem comes when the quote is sent and you get to see how big of a price tag it is to build out your dream using technology.  Most agencies charge around 150 an hour and most projects range from $3k to $100,000k. To most business owners, this is a stretch. You already have employee expenses, rent, materials etc.. that you have to pay out. So when an agency sends you a quote for $5k to build you a website, you are in shock.

Lets put that into perspective. If you go to an agency and you just need a basic website ( most agencies don’t create basic sites) with about 15 web pages, video capabilities, client interaction and a beautifully laid out strategy and user experience, then to you that is not much. Here is what that looks like for an agency. The average time spent building each page is about 3 hours per page. If you take that and multiply it by the number of pages that you need then your total hours should be 45 hours. If you take the average hourly rate of $150 and multiply it by the time, your project is right around $5265. Believe it or not, this is actually a low price.

You may find an inexperienced designer or a company that caters to cookie cutter design that can do it for right around $1k.  The problem here is typically that your website will act as a internet billboard and nothing more. Agencies try their hardest to may your website an investment and not an expense. They do this by creating a strategic user experience backed by call to actions and a beautiful design. The design will be custom in most cases and will allow complete flexibility. Agencies usually have the ability to help you scale internally as well but more importantly, it has been proven that most agencies drive results with what they create.

Over time however, there has been an increase in non experienced freelancers trying to charge ridiculous prices for websites with no strategies, no experiences and very watered down designs.

Back to pricing though, $5k to spend on a website is still steep right? Wrong. Heck even $10k is a fair price. The fact that the average cost of a nice vacation is right around $5000  should tell you that to invest in your business by creating a web tool that drives traffic is a good idea. Think about it,$5k on a site or $5k on a vacation. If you are serious about growing your company, the last option is a good choice. Besides, if you invest that money back into your company and the tool drives traffic, then you can take better vacations! Not to mention a strategic web tool can fit perfectly into your current marketing efforts.

We all know how important having an internet presence in this era is. We also know that a website is now one of the main source of credibility for your potential customers. Where you might struggle is when deciding whether to build one yourself, use a WordPress expert, or hire an Agency. Being the owner of an Agency that has WordPress experts handy I would like to say that this post is in no way biased. With that being said, I would like to outline the pros and cons when using each tool for your website!

 

DIY Website Builder

Pros: It is usually very simple to build out a website with one of these. No code expertise is needed. It is also either free or very cheap. It will be responsive.

Cons: You usually end up paying monthly for services that you don’t use. The templates are not unique. You wont have much control of the strategy of your site. You typically will have to pay extra for tools that you need monthly.

Hiring A WordPress Expert

Before I outline the pros and cons here, I want to explain what WordPress is. WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. Or in non geek terms, a really cool content management system.

Pros: 1. The WordPress expert will take most of the work off of your hands. 2. A good WordPress expert knows how to build a stunning website. 3. Again, you wont need to learn code. 4. It’s easily manageable on your own if you have time.

Cons: 1. Most individual WordPress experts charge just as much as an agency but do not offer agency benefits. 2. Most WordPress experts utilize already built themes with not much room for modifications. 3. Once completed, it is usually left up to you to maintain which can be hard to do if you lack time.

Hiring An Agency

Pros: 1. Agency can use multiple platforms and are typically expert coders which will allow complete freedom and control of your design. 2. Agencies use strategy to build your site to help drive conversions. 3. Hiring an Agency means that it is a hands off process for you. 4. You get a whole team of people that can help and not just one. 5. Agencies keep up with industry changes so that your company is not left behind. 6. Agencies can typically stick with you through all of your growing pains.

Cons: 1. Agencies can be expensive ranging from $1500 to $100,000 for a website. 2. The turnaround time can be long. 3. You may run into communication issue.

Although I typically recommend hiring a professional web development agency like us for these projects, I do realize that sometimes budgeting does not allow this. What should your home page look like?

With the home page being one of the most important pages on your website, most DIYers want to crowd it with as much info as possible. The home page is the page that captures your visitors. Yes it needs to be enticing but it does not need to be overcrowded. In most cases less can be more when it comes to your home page. Making this page easy to maneuver with content that is catchy and clean is your best option. There are ways to give just enough information to peak interest, but not enough to make a final decision. This is exactly what you want. Below is a good and example of a home page that captures its audience and drives a point home.

Southern Kitchen is a perfect example of a website with a capturing home page! When they came to us they needed a way to capture their audience’s inner hunger. First, we used big, bold, and clear pictures of food and customer service to bring hunger but capture the owner’s heart and passion for cooking and customer service. Using full width professional photos is a way to capture attention and build credibility with your online viewers!

Call To Action

The home page should also consist of strategically placed “Call to Action” buttons like the ‘Reservation’ button you see below. These Call to Action buttons are one of the dictating tools that will allow your website to tell your customers what to do! If you are wondering what “Above The Fold” means by the way, this means everything that is shown above the cut off of your browser view.

Second, we used small caption boxes, with more call to action buttons that link to other parts of the website. This is a vital part of the user experience and will help guide your visitors through your website with ease. It is also an important marketing tool to drive home the point you are trying to make. In this example, the point that is being made is, get hungry, view our menu, and book a reservation.

Third, we provided a way for people to find them via google maps. This is important because most people will be viewing your content with a mobile device. In this situation, it is good to have a location readily accessible on your website to help your visitors find you. Most of us live in Micro- moments. This means we search on the go, so having a map on your homepage is great if you have a storefront!

The About Us Page

On this page remember to keep it simple! Following some of the same principles of the Home Page, don’t get to word happy here either. Your instinct may say, tell them everything about me here, but statistics have shown that in today’s world, we read less and view more. This means we view pictures and videos more than we read. So, on this page, placing great content like videos, pictures and scrolling sliders are perfect. Your word content should be simple but passionate. Here are some examples of great About Pages (upper: Southern Kitchen/lower: Imani Jean).

The one thing that these two About Pages have in common is that they are focused on driving the point home to the visitor. Yes your About Page is about you, but don’t forget to strategically write content that will get the user to do what you want them to do!

 

Your Services Page

On your services page, it is good to have lists of your services with brief descriptions of what each service is. This page is where your website visitors will go to see if you offer what they need. If your company sells a product then this would be your inventory or menu page. Remember to keep it simple and clean. Although you will be able to give more word content here, you still don’t want to overwhelm your user.

 

If you are in the service industry, finding cool icons that explain your services along with a word explanation is exactly what is needed. If you are in the product, or food industry, using stunning photos and videos to explain your product is what you need. This page also still needs to drive home your point.  Here are some great examples:

As you can see, these websites have a good strategy to help you understand what they offer and how it can help you! Keeping this page interactive will increase the time they spend on your site and potentially push them to purchase, or inquire!

 

The Contact Us Page

So, now that you have effectively directed your website visitor through your site, how do you get them to inquire? This is simple. Make the contact page easily accessible and full of life. Using a contact form is one of the easiest ways to get your visitor to reach out with questions. Where you place your contact form is important as well. A safe spot to put your contact form is in the middle of your page under your other call to actions, and selling points.

 

That’s right, continue to dictate your visitor’s behavior on this page also! The contact us page is typically the last page, but it shouldn’t be neglected. This page will serve as your website customer service, your lead capturing tool, and your basic inquiry tool so make it powerful! Here are some examples:

Although there are many more pages and concepts to your site, we will end here and help tie it all together in an easy to remember format. When creating your site follow this formula:

Remember that most people act off of emotion, this is why your PURPOSE needs to be clearly defined throughout your site. This is done with your CREATIVE CONTENT writing. Write compelling content that draws emotion. There are already companies that have started to use their big ideas to help scale and grow their companies, even their industries. The first company that comes to mind is a growing company called TemperPack. Considering that their whole company is based off an innovative idea, I wouldn’t have expected anything less of them. TemperPack is in the sustainable packaging industry yet they didn’t stop there. They chose to employ their big idea to help grow their company. Their big idea was a productivity app that allowed them to increase employee productivity while tracking other facets of the company!

 

Another growing company that comes to mind is a company called BlueSwipe. Although they are in the payment processing industry, they have started to use their big idea to help the sales industry become a more productive and analyzed industry through easy to use mobile applications for lead management and cold calling.

Still aren’t convinced? Let’s talk about some companies that you are familiar with. Have you ever heard of a company called IBM? I’m sure that you have. They are now known for cloud hosting, consulting, and computer hardware. Do you remember where they started? Some of their earlier products where, employee time keeping systems, punch card equipment and weighing scales. Throughout the years they have been using innovative technology to grow and scale by tackling Cloud Computing!

 

Or let’s even use Facebook as an example. They started out with a platform, and now they have utilized their big Idea to bring the internet to every aspect of the world. They create drones, apps, software, and even systems to help the company grow, scale and make a difference!

 

Making Your Idea Work

As a busy CEO, VP, Operations manager, etc, you already have a lot on your plate. With that being said, don’t try to do this on your own. First, hire a company that can help you create your idea but doesn’t want to own your idea.

Second, make sure your idea is not just going to help your company, but companies outside of yours as well. This is the best way to make your big idea a second revenue stream for your company.

Third, use your idea and track the progress that it is creating so that you can have solid evidence that it does what you said it will do.

Whenever we consult with a company on how to use innovative technology to get their big idea to become a big reality, we always stress the cost vs investment mentality. What this means is that most of the time the money that you will put into this project will most likely turn into an investment that yields a return. This is not the case 100% of the time, but it does happen if your idea is a great idea that can help many. Here are some costs that can be associated with using innovative technology.

Creating Mobile Apps: These investments can be anywhere from $3000 to $500,000 dollars depending on complexity and functionality. The main reason is because mobile apps take on average 900+ hours to be successful.

Creating Software i.e. CRMs, Web Apps, and Online Platforms: These investments can be anywhere from $5000 to $20,000. They don’t take up as much time to build as mobile apps.

Creating Hardware i.e. Machines, Tools, Gadgets: These investments can be anywhere from $30 to millions of dollars. This is because of patents, supplies and resources to build.

Although the investments may be high for some, keep in mind that returns can be much greater.

This blog is intended to help you gain a better understanding of what each social media platform can be used for with your business. There are tons of social media trainees out there who still have some confusion as to what the purpose of using social media platforms for business is. Although I will not cover all three, I will cover three major ones and I hope to help clear this up, so let’s get started!

 

 

 

Facebook:

Although Facebook is a multi-faceted platform, there are still certain marketing techniques or branding techniques that just simply do not work. I will not go into what those are with this blog but I will say, think of Facebook as a place to cast a huge net to try to catch a ton of fish. If you aren’t on Facebook and you own a business, you have already lost the battle!

Facebook is indeed one of the fastest growing social media platforms around with a staggering 1.7 billion active users! Facebook uses a tool called target marketing to drive companies to users based on what they are interested in. Now I won’t get into a ton of detail on this but the stats are crazy. I will tell you however what Facebook is good for. Because Facebook has a huge following, this is obviously a perfect place to start your MARKETING efforts. Facebook can be used to drive traffic to a specific product, service, or event. It is an excellent source for creating campaigns that drive traffic to your website, landing page, product page, and YouTube page or any page that has a good or service. Why is that? Facebook uses the interest of their users and markets companies to them based off of what they post about, like, or follow the most. What does that mean for you? This means that whatever your brand or product is, out of the 1.7 billion users, you have the potential to have your campaign reach thousands, if not millions of people that are interested in what you have. Get good at writing great ads, and you can see a lot of traffic!

So what is Facebook good for? BRANDING & MARKETING! Use Facebook as one of your Marketing tools. Although you can build a brand using Facebook, it is a lot simpler to market here. Create a fan page, get a following, and start doing some marketing. Brands that do the best on Facebook are typically already established.  With that being said let’s move on to our next platform.

Ohhh the puzzling world of gramers. From most small business owners, I hear “Instagram is just a place to post pics of your food and stuff right?” or “ I don’t see the point of it, it just seems like a bunch of selfies to me”. No No No, my fellow entrepreneur. Instagram can be a powerful tool for your company. Here’s why.

 

Instagram by far is killing the social media game! They are a photo and video sharing powerhouse and they have an average of 300 million daily active users, 20% of all internet users, and a staggering 27% of the U.S population on their platform! Still think this is just a game? Now that we have gotten the boring stats out of the way, let’s talk about Instagram behavior.

Although Facebook and Instagram may seem similar, they breed a different following. Instagram tends to have a following that is passionate. This passion can be directed towards, art, fashion, technology, etc… Most Gramers only post about what they are passionate about. If that’s food, well, that’s what you will see. So how does this help your business? In my blog titled “Branding Vs Marketing” I mentioned that a brand is who you are. Who you are is typically what you are passionate about. So if Instagramers are typically people of passion, then you’re in luck. According to Instagram statistics, 75% of their users use Instagram to fins particular vendor accounts. That’s you!

 

So building your brand is where you should use Instagram. Gramers follow companies with a passionate brand! Not to mention Instagram has a valuable algorithm to help people find you. It’s called the hashtag, aka the #. This little tool is valuable! If you are a restaurant that is passionate about feeding the homeless, well #feedthehomeless has over 36K searches on Instagram. If you are a car lot that is passionate about selling dream cars, well #dreamcar has over 900k searches! Get the picture? This makes Instagram the perfect place to share your passion, aka, your brand with those looking for you!

I have had many questions asked about this platform. Some of them are, “so what can I do with LinkedIn?” or “Isn’t it just like Facebook?” If you have questions about LinkedIn and its purpose, well it’s actually quite simple. First let me give you some stats. LinkedIn has over 433 million users and 37% of the U.S digital population. Again, this is HUGE!

 

So what is its purpose? So, Facebook is a valuable marketing tool, Instagram is a valuable brand builder, now LinkedIn…. Simply put, LinkedIn is a tool to network, find the skills you need to employ, or find the people that need your brand. Although building a following on LinkedIn is a tough one, it is worth it. LinkedIn is like going to networking events. You will find that most users are motivated, forward thinking individuals with skills that you can utilize or a need that you fill. It’s a more professional setting, where posting pics of your food, or videos of your employees acting silly is frowned upon. Because LinkedIn has such a rich culture of CEO’s, working professionals, and Startup co-founders, this makes it a perfect place for those of you that cater to the B2B market. Now, I am not saying that if you are in the business to consumer market then you don’t need it, I am saying that B2B works best here! So what is LinkedIn good for? NETWORKING, PRODUCT PROMOTIONS, and SKILL FINDING.

Lets start by saying that both branding and marketing are extremely important when building your company. This blog is not meant to get you to stop marketing just to brand or visa versa. Its purpose is to help you understand the difference and give you some tips on how to be more affective and caputuring with your brand identity and marketing efforts! With that being said lets get started:

What Is A Brand?

This is the first question that we will tackle. A brand is a “Unique design, sign, symbol, words, or a combination of these, employed in creating an image that identifies a product and differentiates it from its competitors. Over time, this image becomes associated with a level of credibility, quality, and satisfaction in the consumer’s mind . Thus brands help harried consumers in crowded and complex marketplace, by standing for certain benefits and value.” – Bussiness Dictionairy.

So in other words a brand is who you are. It is what your company stands for. It is what your company believes and the values that your company witholds.

Take Mcdonalds for example: Mcdonalds

When you drive by those big golden arches in the middle of no where USA and you’re hungry, there might be small food stops around, but your going to Mcdonalds. Why? Because they are a BRAND that you trust. You know there misson, values and company views! Not to say that those small food stops aren’t good, its just that you trust Mcdonalds more because they spent time branding themselves as the company that can get you the food you love, FAST. “Im Lovin It”. You know what they offer at all times, their color scheme, and even there songs! Thats affective branding.

What is Marketing?

Marketing is the management process through which goods and services move from concept to the customer. See, big difference. The marketing process is what drives traffic to the brand itself. When creating your brand identity, you have to think to your self, what is my goal, my mission, my purpose for my company. Once you have figured that out, then its time to come up with a design that will portray that goal or purpose.
