Step By Step Guide To Building A Website

In this blog I will cover what the anatomy of your website should be from Home Page to Contact Page. I will cover layouts, current trends, color schemes, call to actions, and much more!
We all know that it can be extremely frustrating to learn a new skill. Although I typically recommend hiring a professional web development agency like us for these projects, I do realize that sometimes budgeting does not allow this. What should your home page look like?
With the home page being one of the most important pages on your website, most DIYers want to crowd it with as much info as possible. The home page is the page that captures your visitors. Yes it needs to be enticing but it does not need to be overcrowded. In most cases less can be more when it comes to your home page. Making this page easy to maneuver with content that is catchy and clean is your best option. There are ways to give just enough information to peak interest, but not enough to make a final decision. This is exactly what you want. Below is a good and example of a home page that captures its audience and drives a point home.
Above The Fold
Southern Kitchen is a perfect example of a website with a capturing home page! When they came to us they needed a way to capture their audience’s inner hunger. First, we used big, bold, and clear pictures of food and customer service to bring hunger but capture the owner’s heart and passion for cooking and customer service. Using full width professional photos is a way to capture attention and build credibility with your online viewers!
Call To Action
The home page should also consist of strategically placed “Call to Action” buttons like the ‘Reservation’ button you see below. These Call to Action buttons are one of the dictating tools that will allow your website to tell your customers what to do! If you are wondering what “Above The Fold” means by the way, this means everything that is shown above the cut off of your browser view.
After The Fold
Second, we used small caption boxes, with more call to action buttons that link to other parts of the website. This is a vital part of the user experience and will help guide your visitors through your website with ease. It is also an important marketing tool to drive home the point you are trying to make. In this example, the point that is being made is, get hungry, view our menu, and book a reservation.

Third, we provided a way for people to find them via google maps. This is important because most people will be viewing your content with a mobile device. In this situation, it is good to have a location readily accessible on your website to help your visitors find you. Most of us live in Micro- moments. This means we search on the go, so having a map on your homepage is great if you have a storefront!
Also choosing a backdrop image is an important tool to visual appeal!
The About Us Page
On this page remember to keep it simple! Following some of the same principles of the Home Page, don’t get to word happy here either. Your instinct may say, tell them everything about me here, but statistics have shown that in today’s world, we read less and view more. This means we view pictures and videos more than we read. So, on this page, placing great content like videos, pictures and scrolling sliders are perfect. Your word content should be simple but passionate. The one thing that these two About Pages have in common is that they are focused on driving the point home to the visitor. Yes your About Page is about you, but don’t forget to strategically write content that will get the user to do what you want them to do!
Your Services Page
On your services page, it is good to have lists of your services with brief descriptions of what each service is. This page is where your website visitors will go to see if you offer what they need. If your company sells a product then this would be your inventory or menu page. Remember to keep it simple and clean. Although you will be able to give more word content here, you still don’t want to overwhelm your user.
If you are in the service industry, finding cool icons that explain your services along with a word explanation is exactly what is needed. If you are in the product, or food industry, using stunning photos and videos to explain your product is what you need. This page also still needs to drive home your point. As you can see, these websites have a good strategy to help you understand what they offer and how it can help you! Keeping this page interactive will increase the time they spend on your site and potentially push them to purchase, or inquire!
The Contact Us Page
So, now that you have effectively directed your website visitor through your site, how do you get them to inquire? This is simple. Make the contact page easily accessible and full of life. Using a contact form is one of the easiest ways to get your visitor to reach out with questions. Where you place your contact form is important as well. A safe spot to put your contact form is in the middle of your page under your other call to actions, and selling points.
That’s right, continue to dictate your visitor’s behavior on this page also! The contact us page is typically the last page, but it shouldn’t be neglected. This page will serve as your website customer service, your lead capturing tool, and your basic inquiry tool so make it powerful! Here are some examples:

Although there are many more pages and concepts to your site, we will end here and help tie it all together in an easy to remember format. When creating your site follow this formula:
Purpose+ Creative Content + Marketing Strategy= A website that pushes the user to act. Remember that most people act off of emotion, this is why your PURPOSE needs to be clearly defined throughout your site. This is done with your CREATIVE CONTENT writing. Write compelling content that draws emotion.
